Germans Demonstrate in Berlin for Legalization of Marijuana

BERLIN (AP) — More than 4,000 people marched through the German capital in the 20th annual demonstration in support of legalizing marijuana.

Under the banner “legalization is in the air,” the demonstrators started their route Saturday at Berlin’s main train station and ended it at City Hall.

Demonstrators were lobbying for the government to allow broad use of marijuana for medical purposes, expanded research of medical marijuana, and for a regulated marijuana market and end to the prosecution of consumers.

Marijuana is illegal in Germany though possession of small amounts is tolerated by police, and a few hundred people have been given allowances to use it for medical purposes.

Police say the demonstration was peaceful and there were no reports of arrests.
